Let nothing move you!
I always loved listening to Richard Ghusta’s travel stories. One day he told of some fellow travellers across South Asia. The buses were crowded with mothers, children, merchandise, and chickens, so riding atop with the men and the baggage was the only option. The local men were welcoming and friendly as they allotted him his roof-space. He said that as the miles went by something was happening that he didn’t notice until it was too late. He laughed as he described how he found himself sitting ‘tangled up like a ball in his own arms and legs’ as the old men slept soundly up against him. They had expertly encroached upon his space. They moved toward him from all sides as the bus rocked and rolled along the dirt roads. When jumping down to help push the bus out of mud with the other young men, he came back to an ever-decreasing spot. But, he said, “Their most effective invasion weapons were their elbows.” Richard loved those people, but he learned quickly: “Don’t give ground!”Christians are too quick to give ground, not to fellow travellers, but to the devil.Satan is always trying to reclaim that which was his—the souls of men.We are secure in the fact that the Kingdom of Christ has busted the Gates of Death open. Nothing can prevent the Holy Spirit from coming into a man and transforming him from the inside out, if that is what a man wants. “Jesus Saves!”But, though a Christian walks in the security of the Spirit, he still walks through the territory controlled, to a point, by the “prince of this world”—The Devil. With every single bump on the road to heaven, every nuisance thing that needles you, and every feeling of use and abuse, Satan is there to convince you to quit the Narrow Road. Take Paul’s expert advice:“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain” (1Cor.15:58).
