Welcome to Our Church

At the Morningside Church of Christ, we do not claim to have all the answers or be able to provide everything your soul is longing for. But we are followers of the One who does claim to be “The Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6). Jesus does not claim to offer you an easy life. But He does say that when your life is lived in Him and through Him that it will be the most fulfilling life possible.

Baruch—The truest of Friends

Every man needs a friend who will stay with him to the end. The apostle Paul had Luke and Jeremiah had Baruch. Both wrote more than a little of our Bibles, both appear in the narratives, and both were true believers in the things they wrote.Baruch was Jeremiah’s amanuensis. God spoke to Jeremiah and Baruch wrote it all down.Baruch’s brother, Seraiah, was the officer in charge of King Zedekiah’s household (Jer.51:59). Thus, there may be some credence to the tradition…

Lois and Eunice—The Hands that Rocked the Cradle

A great apostacy of the Lord’s church in New Zealand in the 1950s saw our numbers decimated. It was the work of an old single sister in the Lord that helped bring back the light (others were working elsewhere, also). Simply put, Miss Edie took some young men and raised the church around them. Scratch the surface of most local congregations and you will find stories of dedicated sisters having poured their hearts and resources into the growth of the…

Epaphroditus—More than willing to die!

Congregations are like people, the moment they forget their roots is the moment that they lose their way. The church at Philippi knew their beginnings and remembered the man that Jesus sent to make it happen (Acts 16). When Paul was imprisoned in Rome the Philippian church dispatched Epaphroditus with a gift to meet Paul’s needs (Phil.4:18). Not only did Epaphroditus bring a gift, he was a gift. Paul understood and appreciated the immense value of this brother. He praised…

Lamech—First at everything..?

Well, not everything. But he would have been if he could have been.Though he did rack up a few personal and family firsts: *First to practice polygamy by taking two wives, Adah and Zillah.*Thus, the first to break God’s marriage laws (Gen.2:24). *Adah’s firstborn, Jabal, became the first large scale tent-dwelling farmers. *And his brother, first runner-up, Jubal, was the first to rise a family of instrumentalists. *Zillah’s firstborn, Tubal-cain, was the first to make iron instruments. *And Naamah…she was…

Three Captains of Fifty – All they had to do was ask. In 2 Kings 1 we find Elijah’s encounter with King Ahaziahand his three Captains of Fifty. Ahaziah was crippled byrecent injures and sent men to consult a pagan god. Elijahintercepted his messengers and sent them back with aquestion and a judgement: “Is it because there is no God inIsrael that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the godof Ekron? Therefore, this is what the Lord says: ‘You…

To this day Ethiopia remembers the evangelist Philip asthe man of God who preached the gospel to their firstconvert. We know him as the Ethiopian eunuch fromActs 8. This man was the treasurer of Queen Candaceand a proselyte (a non-Jew who had converted to theHebrew faith). My guess is that it was a prayer forinsight into the Messianic passage (Isaiah 53) thatbrought Philip (sent by God) to his chariot to explain thepassage to him. If you seek you will find!…

Bulletin – 23 August 2020

There’s a story about a preacher boy who was invited toa dinner for the old-timers who had long graced thelocal pulpits. Having been warned that the length oftheir sermons and prayers were legendary, the youngpreacher set in for a long day. It was during the ratherlengthy prayer of thanks for the food that he could nolonger contain himself. Seeing all the grey heads bowedresolutely around the table, the young preacher quietlytook to his seat and began to devour the food…
