If you have watched debates dealing with the Existence of God, you might have noticed that, with rare exceptions, they tend to be fully scripted. Both sides present their arguments with confidence and determination, and with, of course, no room for doubt that they are correct on every point. These debates have their place but listen to enough of them and you will realise their limitations in turning hearts to Christ. If a person cannot see God in His creation and the inherent moral laws within each one of us, then no progress can be assumed.
It was a wise person who said, “A man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still.”
Since the Christian lives to share the reason for the hope within them (1 Peter 3:15), we must ever be ready to persuade others to make that hope in Christ their own.
All manner of fears arises when we contemplate sharing our faith. Fears are best faced with prayer, preparation, and practice. We must pray for boldness, prepare to present the reasons we believe, and practise on everyone we can—Christian and non-Christian alike.
In years past I had members of various churches “Witness” to me. They would present a memorised account of their conversion experience and then asked me, “Have you been saved?” I always admired their courage and in most cases their genuine care for my spiritual welfare. But what has always stuck with me is the thought that all of us would also do well to “Tell our faith story” to all we meet.
It is the Holy Spirit who convicts a soul of its sin. You and I are called to be instruments to preach the Gospel of grace to lost sinners. All of “Us” want all of “Them” to be saved.
Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade them (2 Corinthians 5:11).
