“A truthful witness saves lives, But he who utters lies is treacherous” (Proverbs 14:25)

“A truthful witness saves lives, But he who utters lies is treacherous” (Proverbs 14:25)

Hans Christian Anderson’s classic story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes” is not likely to disappear from our shelves in the near future. The pivotal point in the story, where a child yells out the obvious, “The Emperor has got no clothes,” (the adults stayed silent in the face of fear, vanity and greed), speaks sense into us all. This is reminiscent of the children praising Jesus as Messiah at his Triumphal Entry. When the religious leaders complained, Jesus replied, “Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes…thou hast perfected praise?” (Mt.21:16).The Christian is a bold witness for truth in all of life’s settings.Life and Freedom is bound up in Truth. To let a lie go by, is to join in its treachery. “A truthful witness saves lives, But he who utters lies is treacherous” (Proverbs 14:25).Anderson’s Emperor stuck to the lies of his conmen. Though confronted with the obvious, he ignored it, and proudly walked on. Israel’s religious leaders stuck to their lies. Though confronted with the obvious, they also ignored it, and proudly walked on. Jesus is the embodiment of truth. His life, teachings and works are to be tested by all. All facts out on the table. If his claim to Messiahship stands up to intense scrutiny, believe it! If it doesn’t, it must be a lie to be resisted. The Christian does not back away from those who question. What’s more, Jesus does not need anyone’s approval to be examined. His reputation speaks for itself. He needs no propping up by half-convinced followers. In the courtroom of Life, we are Truthful Witnesses. We speak that which we have seen!
