Looking after yourself—Number One.
Brian is a lawn-mowing contractor and a good friend of mine. He is all muscle and has never carried an extra ounce of weight. However, with near lethal high blood pressure readings and extreme cholesterol numbers, this 58 year-old man had to change some things. He was told to cut back on the junk food and was handed the customary cocktail of pills to cover all the bases. All seems to be well, so far—Praise the Lord!Since I lack Brian’s work hardened frame, my doctor told me to cut ‘out’ junk food, but also prescribed the pills. To talk about extra ‘ounces,’ in my case, is an insult to reality. Though I do pound the pavement faithfully, sadly, I have overeaten any gains.Preaching to the brothers about weight loss is a waste of time; it was for me. You can at best standby as a lifeguard ready to help the drowning man when he stops thrashing. In Christian service usefulness is paramount. It goes without saying that our bodies are the tools gifted to us to carry out that work. The Holy Spirit dwells within you, thus making your mortal body His dwelling place. He uses it as a centre of work and influence to bring glory to God through that daily Christian service—You not only walk in the Spirit, The Spirit walks inside of you.God did not design you for the life of an isolated, stoic monk. Your body is to be enjoyed while gainfully employed for Christ. Joy becomes near impossible when your body is always trying to keep up. Everything slows down—I’m done with that. We are given somewhere between 70 – 120 years to live. As brother Austin often jokes, “The runway is getting shorter;” no time to waste. Our Number One consideration in life is to be ready for Christ’s return. Don’t let that body be a distraction to that cause.
