Series: Running toward the Prize. #1. “You are surrounded!”

I have a friend in Zimbabwe who loves Formula One Racing. Lord willing, I will one day join him in the crowd. If his enthusiasm is anything to go by, then it is true what they say: “Grand Prix is electrifying.” As you know, in Formula One, ‘Pole Position’ (the racing car at the front of the starting grid) is the best place to be. No less than 40% of races are won from Pole Position.

As much as it is coveted, in reality, it is earned. Only winners go to the front. From there they only have those behind them to worry about. Everyone else has to constantly negotiate their way through and around the pack. Though an unenviable job, it must be done in order to work their way to the front. I know the writer of the Book of Hebrews didn’t have Grand Prix Racing in mind when he exclaimed: “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us” (Heb.12:1).

He was speaking of being surrounded by those from the famous “Hall of Faith” in chapter eleven. This long list of souls are men and women who walked with God in Old Testament times. The most beautiful thing about the list is that they are chosen as ‘Definite winners!’ What they had was what we need. The more you think about this the more electrifying it becomes. Too many doubt that they can win the ‘Christian Race.’ These ‘Hall of Faith’ winners are assuring us that we can win. Space prevents me from going into detail about the individual shortcomings of many on the list. Suffice it to say that despite all, God brought them through. He will bring you through also.

A winner you will be – just kept running toward the Prize!
